BFI: A LEVEL STUDY DAY

UK CINEMA, AUDIENCES AND INSTITUTIONS

Tuesday 9 February. Meet at Waterloo under the clock at 9.30 a.m. Bring a packed lunch!

On  Tuesday 9 February 2015 we visit the British Film Institute as part of our study for G322, section B, on the film industry. The lead presenter is Matthew Hall, Head of Film and Media Studies at Kings High School and veteran BFI presenter. He is author of Teaching Men and Film (BFI, 2005). He has an MA in Postmodernism and Contemporary Culture, and has run workshops on Youth Subculture Theory at the BFI Media Studies Conference.

Why do audiences at home and abroad enjoy British films and how do UK filmmakers appeal to these audiences? This study day will examine these issues using case studies of two independent film companies - Vertigo and Warp. The morning's session will be clip-based and interactive. You will be introduced to different cinematic representations of the U.K. and 'Britishness' and how these target specific audience groups. In the afternoon, there will be a screening of a recent British film, followed by a Q & A with a filmmaker.

 

Travel arrangements

Year 12 students will meet at Waterloo under the clock at 9.30 a.m. The group will walk together accompanied by staff between Waterloo and BFI Southbank, then back together for the return journey, reaching Waterloo at about 4.0 p.m. Students will make their own way home by train form Waterloo.

Students should bring a packed lunch that we will eat under cover at The National Theatre.
